Theory and History of Journalism
Description
The “Theory and History of Journalism” Department has a significant value for the development of the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication and of journalism education in Bulgaria. Ten full-time lecturers are working in that department – and eight of them are habilitated. The public image of this department is successfully given as an example for good management and sustainability of the relationship between tradition and innovation, between theory and practice.
Lecturers from this department are leading key disciplines for the education of “Journalism”, “Public Relations” and “Book Publishing” students. Their teaching methods include a broad set of presentations and teaching materials. The skillful combination of traditional academic lecturing and good multimedia presentations, the inclusion of audio and video files, Internet resources and platforms (e.g. Moodle), and geographic maps help for the in-depth, interesting and relevant presentation of the study material. The possibility of balancing of the theoretic material with its practical verification during seminars makes it easier for the students to form alone scientific knowledge through laboratory work, social experiments, and role-play games.
The “History and Theory of Journalism” Department has the responsibility of observing the education of “Journalism” major students – full and part-time forms within the three thematic profiles led by this department – “International Journalism”, “Internal Political Journalism”, and “Culture”. These profiles allow further professional specialization of students with the aim of forming of in-depth knowledge in the different thematic spheres.
As an addition to the leading scientific and academic affirmation as part of the quality education at Sofia University, the “History and Theory of Journalism” department lecturers are developing in-depth science projects with the participation of students and PhD students from the FJMC. They also attract practicing journalists as lecturers in their classes, which allows them to show the practical aspects of the journalistic profession.
The “History and Theory of Journalism” Department lecturers are exceptionally active when participating in lecturers exchange programs with foreign universities, in participating in international conferences, seminars, and specializations.
