THE World University Rankings by Subject

FJMC is the only Bulgarian representative in the subject area "Communication and Media Studies" in the international ranking THE World University Rankings by Subject 2025. The ranking was announced on January 22, 2025.

Sofia University entered THE Rankings by Subject in 2017 and since then has increased the number of academic fields in which it is ranked. In 2025, it ranked 601+ in the academic field of "Arts and Humanities" (History and Archaeology, Philology, Philosophy, Theology, Fine Arts) and 1001+ in "Social Sciences" (Communication and Media, Political Sciences, Social Activities, Cultural Studies, Tourism).

The THE Rankings by Subject use the highly accurate and demanding indicators of the overall university rankings, THE World University Rankings. They assess the strengths of each higher education institution in relation to its core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

QS World University Rankings by Subject: Communication  and  Media  Studies

In 2026, Sofia University will be included for the first time in the Social Sciences and Management category of the QS World University Rankings (UK), which covers education in the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication.

FJMC will be evaluated and ranked for the first time in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. It is expected to be ranked in the relevant subject area QS World University Rankings by Subject: Communication and Media Studies. More than 250 higher education institutions offering courses in communication and media studies compete in this ranking, with the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands) traditionally taking first place.

The results of the surveys account for 45% of the final score of Sofia University in the QS World University Rankings. They are conducted between November 2025 and February 2026. The new QS ranking will be announced on March 24, 2026.

Sofia University itself climbed the QS World University Rankings for the second consecutive year in 2023, ranking in the 561–570 group (up from 591–600 in 2022). In 2023, it was ranked for the first time in the Arts and Humanities category of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, where it ranked 388th. In 2025, Sofia University is ranked in four areas of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025 – Theology Divinity & Religious Studies, Arts and Humanities, Physics & Astronomy, and Computer Science & Information Systems. It improves its position in the field of Arts and Humanities and ranks 255th. For the third consecutive year, it is ranked in the field of Theology in the Arts and Humanities and ranks 51-100th.

The QS World University Rankings provide an independent comparative analysis of 55 academic disciplines (subject areas) and 5 broad areas. The assessment is based on five criteria: academic reputation, reputation among employers, citations of publications, h-index, and international research network.

We monitor the QS World University Rankings dashboard for compatibility with educational programs abroad and for comparisons of our institution and educational programs prior to the publication of the QS World University Rankings each year. On this basis, we identify and promote our strengths in order to attract high-quality students, faculty, partnerships, and funding.

FJMC is the Bulgarian leader in the academic field of "Liberal Arts & Social Sciences" in the international ranking EduRank`2025. The ranking by the independent rating agency EduRank, based in the UK, was announced on March 25, 2025.

For the entire academic field of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences, Sofia University ranks No. 1 out of a total of 24 universities evaluated in Bulgaria, No. 561 out of a total of 1,500 in Europe, and No. 1,621 out of a total of 7,081 worldwide.

First place for Bulgaria was awarded to six majors in the field of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences, for which the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication at Sofia University provides higher education:

Bulgarian National H-index Ranking: Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski"

The international ranking National H-index Ranking is the only ranking in the world that assesses the scientific level of organizations and scientists based on a unified metric for the H-index from open databases (Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar).

In the National H-index Ranking 2025 for all scientific organizations in Bulgaria, Sofia University ranks second with a National H-index of 191 (first place goes to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences with a National H-index of 2027).
